Haiti Disaster Relief

THE EARTHSHIP BIOTECTURE HAITI RECOVERY EXPEDITION

The objective of this first trip to Haiti will be to establish immediate shelter and independent utility systems for twelve people in two weeks. The methods used will be aimed at immediate shelter that can be evolved into permanent shelter as opposed to immediate shelter that is later replaced by permanent shelter. This enables our first efforts to be in the direction of the ultimate goal of permanent sustainable shelter for all Haitians rather than just emergency steps which may provide for an immediate need but that go nowhere in the over all long term scheme of a sustainable future for Haiti.

We expect to use this first trip to enable us to absorb an understanding of the living situation in Haiti and thereby formulate a more in depth long term plan for the application of proper Earthship technologies as they relate to conditions, culture and economics of the country.

We are basically using tent technology but taking it a step further by placing a smaller tent inside a larger tent providing room for insulation to make this temporary shelter more comfortable. We are then using abbreviated versions of Earthship power, water and contained sewage systems which will work on a long term (not just temporary) basis as the tent structures evolve into more permanent structures.

We have done many projects in tropical climates and we find the use of domes and vaults made of rebar cages plastered with cement to be both structurally functional and earthquake proof while utilizing products easily available in these areas.

We intend to vault and dome over the double insulated tent structures thus turning them into permeant structures using skills that are easy to learn and already existent to some degree in these areas. These more permanent structures will then continue to use the Earthship utility systems already put in place during the period of basic double insulated tent use. The bottom line here is immediate shelter with independent utility systems that evolves into permeant structures with independent utility systems.

If this technology were to spread all over the country of Haiti, it would reduce the need for expensive infrastructure and empower the people of Haiti through skills, employment and being in command of their own shelter and destiny.

“The death toll from Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti could be between 45,000 and 50,000, with another three million people hurt or homeless, a senior Haitian Red Cross official said on Thursday.”

Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive quantified the number of dead at "well over 100,000." .

In comments to The Miami Herald, Preval described the situation as unimaginable and said he had had to step over dead bodies himself and could hear the cries of trapped victims, including under the national Parliament building.

"Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed," Preval told the Miami Herald. "There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them."

We are raising $74,000 to provide 12 people in Haiti with comfortable, immediate shelter that can evolve into permanent shelter with full utilities - power, water, sewage and food production.

$6,000 PER PERSON FOR HOUSING WITH FULL UTILITIES. We expect this to drop to $4,000 per person
after the first demonstration compound is built.
